National Health Systems and Other Insurances

By default, UNSMIS serves as the primary health insurance provider for its members. Reimbursements are calculated based on the Internal Rules and typically cover a fixed percentage of eligible medical expenses. This is known as the insured member’s out-of-pocket or co-share.

However, if you are already covered by a national or other mandatory health insurance scheme, UNSMIS can step in as a secondary, complementary insurer.
In this case, first, you must submit your claim to your primary insurer. Once their reimbursement is processed, you can submit the remaining, unreimbursed amount to UNSMIS. When acting as a secondary insurer, UNSMIS reimburses the remaining eligible costs at 100%, up to the maximum amount reimbursable under our Rules.

To ensure smooth processing, submit your claim via eClaims or the UNSMIS mobile application and be sure to tick the box indicating that you are also covered by another health insurance scheme.

This coordination of benefits helps maximize your coverage and minimize your expenses.
