Short-term Staff

If you are on Temporary Appointment (TA) of a duration of less than three months, you may opt for health insurance coverage under UNSMIS’s Temporary Plan. Should you hold such a Temporary Appointment, it is not possible to enrol members of your family to your health insurance plan.

The Temporary Plan only includes basic benefits, which may be granted in cases of sickness or accidents. Most benefits may be paid in accordance with the terms, conditions and rates indicated in Annex III of the Internal Rules, with the exception of those subject to an exclusion or limitation, as detailed in Annex V of the Internal Rules (available here). The Supplementary Plan is not applicable for members of the Temporary Plan.

Furthermore, as opposed to those holding a contract of six months or more, as a member of the Temporary Plan, you are not entitled to an extension of your health insurance coverage beyond your date of separation. For more information, please see the article ‘Separating Staff’.

In case your contract is extended beyond the initial period of less than three months, resulting in a cumulative duration of three months or more, you become eligible to join UNSMIS’s Main Plan. By joining this plan, you are entitled to the same medical benefits as members holding permanent, continuing, fixed-term and temporary contracts of more than three months. This eligibility applies from the first day of your contract that surpasses the three-month mark.

Moreover, at the time of your own enrolment to the Main Plan, you may also enroll eligible members of your family. For details on applicable time frames and the eligibility of your family members for UNSMIS health insurance coverage, please see the articles ‘Dependents and SPPs’, ‘Secondary Dependents’ and ‘Annual Enrolment Campaign
