Laboratory analyses and tests involve examining samples of blood, urine, tissues, or other bodily fluids to detect diseases, assess health, and monitor treatment progress. These are reimbursed if prescribed by a medical doctor for a specific health issue and administered by a physician, lab, or pharmacy.
Preventive laboratory analyses, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA), TSH tests to check for thyroid function, and HIV and hepatitis C tests, are reimbursable once a year at a 100% rate.
Preventive medical check-ups, such as general check-ups with a full health screening that are typically conducted at a hospital and do not involve a diagnosis, are reimbursed at 80%, up to a maximum of CHF 1,000.- per calendar year. These services do not require prior authorization but are available with a valid prescription that should detail the required exams and medical reason.
COVID-19 tests are reimbursed in the same way if administered by trained staff. The requirement for a medical prescription may be waived if written proof is submitted showing that the test was requested by a competent authority. Self-tests and tests requested by a country or airline for personal travel purposes are not reimbursable.
